A specialty of Odate in Akita Prefecture, magewappa (bent woodware) are traditional and painstakingly handmade bento boxes crafted from shaved and steam-bent cedar. The wood releases a fine aroma and contains natural antibacterial properties. These new creations, however, are also elegant conversation stoppers that deserve to be taken out of the lunch tote and made a table centerpiece. Kurikyu`s head designer, Shunji Kurimori, holds the high honor of Japan`s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry craftwork certification.
